Bluetooth Not Working on Windows 11? 8 Fixes to Try

Bluetooth not working on Windows 11? Try these 8 fixes: settings, re-pairing, the troubleshooter, Bluetooth Support Service, drivers and power options.

Your headphones connected yesterday, and today Windows can’t find them. Or the Bluetooth switch has vanished from Settings entirely. When Bluetooth is not working on Windows 11, the cause is usually a setting that got switched off, a stuck pairing, a stopped service or a driver problem. Work through these fixes in order, from quickest to most involved, and test your device after each one.

First: does your PC actually have Bluetooth?

Most laptops have Bluetooth built in, but many desktop PCs don’t. Right-click Start, open Device Manager and look for a Bluetooth category. If there isn’t one and you don’t see an unknown device under Other devices, your PC probably has no Bluetooth hardware. A small USB Bluetooth adapter solves that for little money.

Fix 1: Check the Bluetooth switch and Airplane mode

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices and make sure Bluetooth is turned On.
  2. Open Quick Settings with Windows + A and confirm Airplane mode is off.
  3. On some laptops, a function key (often with an airplane or wireless icon) also turns wireless radios on and off. Press it once if you used it by accident.

Fix 2: Put the device in pairing mode and re-pair it

Many problems come from a pairing that got corrupted.

  1. In Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, find your device, click the three dots and choose Remove device.
  2. Put the device into pairing mode. This varies by brand: often you hold the power or Bluetooth button until a light blinks. Check the manual if you’re not sure.
  3. Click Add device > Bluetooth and select it from the list.

If the device doesn’t appear, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices and set Bluetooth devices discovery to Advanced. By default, Windows 11 hides some device types from the list.

Also make sure the device isn’t still connected to your phone or another computer. Many headphones only connect to one device at a time.

Fix 3: Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter

Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and click Run next to Bluetooth. In recent versions of Windows 11 this opens the Get Help app, which runs the same automated checks and can restart the Bluetooth radio for you.

Fix 4: Restart the Bluetooth Support Service

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Find Bluetooth Support Service and double-click it.
  3. Set Startup type to Automatic.
  4. Click Start (or Stop and then Start if it’s already running), then OK.

If the Bluetooth switch had disappeared from Settings, this fix often brings it back.

Fix 5: Update or reinstall the Bluetooth driver

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Bluetooth.
  2. Right-click your Bluetooth adapter (names often include Intel, Realtek, Qualcomm or MediaTek) and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
  3. If that doesn’t help, choose Uninstall device, restart the PC, and Windows will reinstall the driver.

Also check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for driver updates, and your laptop maker’s support page for the latest Bluetooth driver for your exact model. If the problem started right after a driver update, open the adapter’s Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver.

Fix 6: Stop Windows from turning Bluetooth off to save power

In Device Manager, double-click the Bluetooth adapter, open the Power Management tab (if it’s there) and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. This helps when Bluetooth stops working after the laptop wakes from sleep.

Fix 7: Turn off Fast Startup

Fast Startup can leave hardware in a confused state between sessions. Open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do, click Change settings that are currently unavailable, uncheck Turn on fast startup and save. Then use Restart, not Shut down, to test.

Fix 8: Reduce interference

Bluetooth shares the 2.4 GHz band with many Wi-Fi routers and wireless devices. Move closer to the PC, remove obstacles such as metal desks, and keep USB 3 hubs and external drives away from a USB Bluetooth adapter, since they can cause interference. If your Wi-Fi also drops, our guide on a laptop Wi-Fi that keeps disconnecting covers the shared causes.

Connected but no sound?

If headphones connect but audio still plays from the speakers, click the speaker icon on the taskbar, open the arrow next to the volume slider and choose your headphones as the output device. If the sound quality drops during calls, that’s normal: when the microphone is in use, many headphones switch to a lower-quality “Hands-Free” mode.

FAQ

Why did the Bluetooth option disappear in Windows 11?

Usually the Bluetooth Support Service stopped, the driver failed to load, or the adapter was disabled. Restart the service, check Device Manager for the adapter, and reinstall the driver if needed.

Why won’t Windows 11 find my Bluetooth device?

The device may not be in pairing mode, it may still be connected to another device, or Windows may be hiding it. Set Bluetooth devices discovery to Advanced and put the device in pairing mode again.

How do I add Bluetooth to a desktop PC?

Plug in a USB Bluetooth adapter. Most work automatically with Windows 11 within a minute, and some come with a driver download for extra features.

Can I use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi at the same time?

Yes. They’re designed to work together, though on some laptops both share one wireless chip. If performance drops when both are busy, connecting to your router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi band can help.
