You’re starting a small business, a YouTube channel or a side project, and you need a logo now, not after paying a designer. Canva’s free plan is enough to make a clean, professional-looking logo in under an hour. This guide shows you how to make a logo in Canva for free, plus the licensing detail most tutorials skip.
What you need before you start
- A free Canva account (sign up at canva.com with email, Google or Facebook).
- Your business or brand name, and a tagline if you want one.
- An idea of the feeling you want: modern, friendly, elegant, playful.
- Two or three colors you like. If you’re unsure, pick one main color and one neutral like dark gray.
You can use Canva in a browser or with the desktop and mobile apps. The steps below use the browser, but the menus are nearly the same everywhere.

Step 1: Create a logo design
- Log in and click Create a design (or the plus button).
- Type Logo and select it. Canva opens a square canvas.
- On the left, the Design tab shows logo templates. You can search by industry, like “bakery logo” or “tech logo”.
Templates with a crown icon are for Canva Pro. If you’re staying on the free plan, stick to templates without it, or you’ll get a watermark when you try to download.
Step 2: Pick a simple starting point
It’s tempting to choose the busiest template, but strong logos are simple. They need to work at tiny sizes, like a social media profile picture or a browser tab. Look for templates with:
- One icon or symbol, not several
- One or two fonts
- Clear space around the text
You can also start from a blank canvas and build your own. That’s the better route if you want something more original.
Step 3: Change the text and fonts
- Double-click the sample text and type your brand name.
- With the text selected, click the font name in the top toolbar to pick another font.
- Adjust size and letter spacing (the Spacing button in the toolbar) until it looks balanced.
A reliable combination is a bold font for the name and a simple, lighter font for the tagline. Avoid pairing two decorative fonts, which tends to look cluttered.
Step 4: Add or swap the icon
- Open Elements on the left side.
- Search for a symbol that fits your brand: “leaf”, “coffee cup”, “house”, “code”.
- Filter to Graphics and choose a simple line or flat icon.
- Drag it onto the canvas, resize it and position it next to or above your name.
Another option skips icons entirely: a wordmark logo that uses only the name in a distinctive font, or a lettermark with your initials inside a circle or square. These are easy to make in Canva and often look more professional than a busy clip-art icon.
Step 5: Set your brand colors
Click any element and then the color square in the toolbar. You can type a hex code (like #1E6F5C) to use exact colors. Write those codes down; you’ll want the same colors on your website, social profiles and business cards.
Before moving on, check that your logo still looks good in black and white. If it only works in color, it’ll be harder to use on receipts, stamps or dark backgrounds.

Step 6: Download your logo
- Click Share at the top right, then Download.
- Choose PNG for the best quality on websites and social media.
- Click Download.
On the free plan, the download has a white or colored background. The Transparent background checkbox is a Pro feature. If you need a transparent version, Canva Pro has a free trial, or you can remove the background with a free image editor. Our list of free alternatives to Photoshop includes tools that handle that well.
Make a few versions while you’re at it: one horizontal (icon beside the name), one stacked (icon above the name) and one icon-only for small profile pictures. Duplicate the page in Canva and rearrange the elements for each.
The licensing detail you should know
Canva lets you use templates and free elements in your designs, but its content license has limits for logos. In short, you generally can’t trademark a logo that uses Canva’s stock templates or elements as your exclusive brand, because other people can use the same pieces. If you plan to register a trademark, build the logo from your own shapes and text, or hire a designer to create something original. Check Canva’s current Content License Agreement for the exact terms before you file anything.
For a small project or a first version of your brand, a Canva logo is perfectly fine. Many businesses start this way and refine the logo later.
Tips for a logo that doesn’t look like a template
- Change at least the font, the colors and the layout from whatever template you started with.
- Remove decorative extras like ribbons, stars or swooshes unless they mean something for your brand.
- Zoom out to about 20% to see how it looks at small sizes.
- Ask two or three people what the logo makes them think of. If the answers don’t match your business, adjust.

FAQ
Is it really free to make a logo in Canva?
Yes. You can design and download a logo on the free plan as long as you use free templates and elements. Pro-only items add a watermark until you upgrade or remove them.
Can I get a transparent PNG logo with Canva Free?
Not directly, since the transparent background option is part of Canva Pro. You can download a normal PNG and remove the background with a free editor, or use a Pro trial.
Can I trademark a logo made in Canva?
Usually not if it uses Canva’s templates or stock elements, because those aren’t exclusive to you. Designs built entirely from your own text and shapes are a different story. Read Canva’s license terms and talk to a trademark professional if this matters for your business.
What size should my logo be?
Canva’s default logo canvas is a good starting point. Download a high-resolution PNG and let each platform scale it down. For print, check with your printer, since they may ask for a PDF.
